Sea Gem Disaster
The Sea Gem Disaster was a tragic event that occurred in 1965 when the British oil rig, Sea Gem, collapsed into the North Sea, killing 13 of the 32 crew members on board.
Introduction
Tragedy at Sea
It was the first North Sea oil rig to produce oil and gas, and its collapse had a significant impact on the oil and gas industry in the region. The disaster led to improvements in safety regulations and procedures for offshore drilling, but it remains a haunting reminder of the risks and dangers associated with this industry.
My great grandfather, was a chef on board the ill-fated Sea Gem, and one of the 13 men who lost their lives in the tragic 1965 disaster. Though I don't know much about him, his death had a profound impact on my family, something never discussed openly. We honour his memory and the sacrifices made by those who work in high-risk occupations.

Gilby Charles Gough:
A Forgotten Hero

Gilby Charles Gough, my great-grandfather and chef on the Sea Gem, was one of the 13 lost in the tragedy. His loss, a silent chapter in our family, honours the often-unseen sacrifices in high-risk jobs.
